Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia and is located in the north-eastern part of Java. It is also the capital of the state of East Java.
Today, Surabaya can boast of having one of the biggest and busiest ports in the region. Quite naturally, the hinterland of Surabaya plays a crucial role in the fast growing economy of the country. Because of its importance as a city, a recent bridge construction project has been undertaken to connect Surabaya to another Indonesian island by the name Madura. This bridge is nearing completion and would be a great boom for the three million inhabitants of Surabaya.
Surabaya is located in the equatorial region. Hence there are only two seasons: a very humid rainy season and a dry season.
The minimum temperature in Surabaya is about 75 degrees (or 25 degree Celsius) during the months of January, February and March. Usually the high temperature reaches to about 92 degrees (or 32 degree Celsius) during the month of October.
The best time to visit Surabaya is either the first or the last month of the year. During these months, it is not really very hot in Surabaya.
Transport system is pretty decent in Surabaya. There are basically three types of buses. While two are of luminous types, the third is ordinary. These buses stop only at certain bus stops.
Surabaya has many places of interest. But some of the most popular tourist attractions that should not be missed by any tourist are: Mpu Tantular Museum, the People's Amusement Park, Surabaya Harbour, Tugu Pahiawan Monument & Museum of Sepuluh Nopember and Surabaya's Zoological Garden.
The zoological garden deserves a special praise because it is the home to some of the rarest animals and reptiles.
Among other animals, one can find orangutans, Komodo dragons and several species of nocturnal animals in this zoological garden.
While at Surabaya, one should pay a visit to Jembatan Merah area. This place has some old houses that date back to 1940s when the Dutch were occupying Surabaya.
These old houses are a sharp contrast to modern city of Surabaya where everyday more and more posh buildings are coming up.
Close to Jembatan Merah, is Chinatown. The Chinatown of Surabaya is also worth a visit.
Another exciting place in Surabaya is the Tunjungan Plaza. The best time to visit Tunjungan Plaza is during the evening when all the discotheques come to life.
The presence of these discotheques and restaurants provide ample proof that the nightlife at Surabaya can be quite thrilling.
The Pasar Pabean area of Surabaya is also quite popular among tourists as there are plenty of shopping plazas and other tourist attractions.
Although Surabaya does not come close to the city of Jakarta, it nevertheless, is a very important city in Indonesia. It is quite a big city and plays an important role in the country's economy.
From a tourist's perspective this city can offer lots of exciting things.
Hence, any one visiting the south-east Asian region should without any hesitation include Surabaya in his or her itinerary. |
